Thank you TELUS FRiendly Future Foundation!
We are very grateful to receive a Community Board Grant from the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation to support our Build-A-Bike program this season!
Build-A-Bike is a free program that teaches youth aged 12-25 how to build their own bicycle that they can keep after finishing the program. Students leave the program with a helmet, lock, front and back lights, a bell, and the bike they built, along with the skills to repair it themselves and ride it safely. We also serve a nutritious home-cooked vegetarian meal with each class to ensure that food insecurity is not a barrier to participation in our program.
Our Build-A-Bike program launched in 2009 with the goal of providing Toronto’s youth with practical, hands-on skills that not only empower them in the moment but also build long-term independence and resilience. What keeps us motivated is the clear impact we’ve seen in the lives of the young people we serve. Many participants have shared that the program has increased their confidence, provided them with a sense of accomplishment, and opened up new opportunities for transportation and employment.
In the past 15 years, over 1000 youth have learned how to build, refurbish, maintain, and ride their bikes safely through our Build-A-Bike program. Thanks to the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, we will continue to be able to provide more youth with free bicycles, safety gear, meals, and community this season!
