(This is a Canada Summer Jobs position; candidates must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment period)

Contract: 30 hours/week, up to 270 hours for the contract

Start and End Dates: TBD: Between May 20th and August 30th (270 hours/9 weeks)

Reports to: Executive Director

Hourly Wage: $22, plus 4% vacation pay

Location: Charlie’s FreeWheels, 242.5 Queen St. E., Toronto

Charlie’s Freewheels uses bicycles to support the development of empowered young leaders, and self-assured young cyclists. We do this by improving youth access to bicycles, facilitating bicycle-related skill development, and inspiring youth to ride with confidence.

Job description

The Bicycle Mechanic will assist with the mechanical aspects of Charlie’s programs during the 2023 season, including but not limited to: bike building, off-site mobile repair, receiving and sorting donations, and drop-in/off repair assistance for youth between the ages of 12 and 25. They will also help maintain the safety, organization, and cleanliness of the shop space and tools. The ideal candidate should have some experience in bike mechanics or the use of different hand tools. Training will be provided.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assist with all aspects of Charlie’s FreeWheels mechanical operation

  2. Assist with receiving, picking up, and processing donations

  3. Maintain the safety, organization, and cleanliness of the shop and tools

  4. Sort and organize used bike parts and accessory inventory

  5. Interact with community members and promote CFW's work

  6. Ensure the work environment is a safe space at all times

  7. Participate in weekly all-staff check-in meeting

  8. Perform other related tasks as needed and deemed safe

Working conditions and physical requirements

The Bicycle Mechanic will be required to move bicycles and heavy boxes containing tools and parts. Assistance and accommodation can be provided to the best of our abilities. They may be required to ride a cargo bike to transport supplies to mobile repair locations. Training on using the cargo bike will be provided.

Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for learning more about bike mechanics and the operations of a nonprofit community bike shop;

  • A patient, constructive and supportive attitude when working with others;

  • Completion of the Charlie’s FreeWheels Build-A-Bike program is an asset;

  • Experience in bike mechanics/use of hand tools is an asset (training will be provided);

  • Experience in community and youth work is an asset;

  • Ability to communicate in languages other than English is an asset:

Work Schedule

The Bicycle Mechanic will be expected to work on evenings and weekends, subject to Charlie’s FreeWheels’ programming schedule. As per Canada Summer Jobs requirement, the candidate must commit to 30 hours of work per week during the employment period.
