About Charlie’s FreeWheels:

Charlie’s FreeWheels uses bicycles to support the development of empowered young leaders, and self-assured young cyclists. We do this by improving youth access to bicycles, facilitating bicycle-related skill development, and inspiring youth to ride with confidence.

Charlie’s FreeWheels is currently recruiting volunteers to serve on the Charlie’s FreeWheels Board of Directors.  


About the Board: 

The Charlie’s FreeWheels board is a working board. That means we actively contribute our time, resources, and skills to support our staff and volunteers.

Collectively, the Board is responsible for:

  • supporting the staff, volunteers, and other Board members of Charlie’s FreeWheels to fulfill the mission and vision of the organization

  • ensuring that Charlie’s FreeWheels remains accountable to its stakeholders

  • monitoring and ensuring the financial sustainability of the organization

  • developing and monitoring progress against the organization’s strategic plan 

  • reviewing and approving organizational policies, in consultation with staff

  • fostering a climate whereby everyone involved with Charlie’s FreeWheels upholds the highest ethical standards 

As a Board member, you would be responsible for: 

  • Attending and participating in monthly Board and committee meetings and special events (board meetings are currently being held in person with a virtual attendance option);

  • Coordinating and/or participating in at least one committee (e.g., Policy, Procedures & Legal, Fundraising, Finance, Communications & Marketing, Board Development & Operations, Human Resources, Partnerships); 

  • Completing tasks as agreed to in Board and committee meeting minutes;

  • Supporting fundraising efforts, soliciting donations from others, and identifying and introducing potential donors, or making a personally significant annual charitable contribution

  • Reviewing and upholding all organizational bylaws and policies.

Desirable Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

Charlie’s FreeWheels is particularly interested in applications from potential candidates with skills, knowledge and experience related to:

  • Fundraising

  • Finance and Budgeting

  • Relationships within the cycling community, Regent Park/Moss Park Community, and/or equity/community organizations

  • Risk management, policies, procedures and legal skills

  • Knowledge of racial justice, gender equity, queer & trans liberation, and economic equity issues

  • Lived experience as a racialized person and/or a person of a marginalized gender 

  • Those with an existing relationship with Charlie’s FreeWheels (e.g. current/past participants, past staff, current/past volunteers, supporters)

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Experience working with and/or demonstrated commitment to non-profit organizations;

  • Interest in and understanding of cycling issues and resources in Toronto;

  • Equity and racial justice competencies, including an understanding of anti-oppression and equity practices;

  • Work or volunteer experience related to the board responsibilities highlighted above.

Board members should expect to contribute between 8-10 hours per month and be prepared to make a personally significant financial contribution to Charlie’s annually.
