History

Charlie’s Freewheels was conceived in memory of our friend, Charles Prinsep, who was tragically struck and killed while touring the country on his bicycle in the summer of 2007.

Charlie believed that an individual’s actions could truly make a difference. He was passionate about cities and strove to make the urban culture he so appreciated more environmentally sustainable. Cycling connected so many of Charlie's interests; bicycles offered him an environmentally sustainable transportation alternative through which he could explore the urban environment. He considered them works of art in themselves.

This organisation aims to support creative and environmentally sustainable initiatives that represent the ideals that Charlie held to create positive change in the Toronto community.

Charlie's Freewheels started in 2008 and has since trained more than 30 youth. In April 2011 we opened the social enterprise bicycle shop. This location hosts all of our workshops to continue teaching job and life skills. Our non-profit shop grew out of the training that was offered at in our maintenance program. Now, over two years after our first program, our past students are learning the life and business skills required to maintain a successful business.

Social Mission

Charlie's Freewheels provides employment and training in basic bicycle maintenance for youth in the Regent Park community, Toronto. Charlie's Bike Shop is where social mission meets enterprise. Our organization helps youth aged 14 to 19 to get ready for work and life by providing skills, jobs in a supportive community.

Charlie's Bike Shop provides employment, job training, and a sense of self reliance to young people. Our ten-week program begins by teaching basic bike mechanic skills by refurbishing a used bike. At the end these youth will have learnt bike safety skills, bike maintenance and be given the bike they worked on along with a lock and helmet. After graduation, we connect interested youth with paid cycling-related internship opportunities and involve them in determining the future direction of our organization. Our Youth Organizing Committee plays a pivotal role in all decisions made at the shop, and takes an active role in continuing to improve and develop Charlie’s FreeWheels programming.
